Dr. Mae Jemison, LeVar Burton and Jill Tarter, Ph.D Call on People Worldwide to LOOK UP October 18 and Reconnect with Each Other and the World
New Skyfie app weaves multimedia Sky Tapestry globe from uploads across the Earth
What’s above us unites us. That’s the message of LOOK UP, a movement spearheaded by astronaut, physician, engineer and educator Dr. Mae Jemison.
“I believe the impact of looking up at the sky can be as profound as seeing the Earth from space orbit. Especially when it’s a shared, worldwide experience!” said Jemison.
LOOK UP on October 18 will be a 24-hour phenomenon when people anywhere on the planet can unite through the simple act of going outside, day or night, any season, to look up at our shared sky.
To experience this connection in real time, LOOK UP has just launched a new app, Skyfie™ (SKEYE-fee). The free Skyfie app captures expressions of what individuals see and feel when they look at the sky in the form of photos, text, videos or audio recordings. By taking a Skyfie, people can use their smartphones for something greater than themselves. All Skyfie posts uploaded via the Skyfie mobile app will be geospatially displayed over a digital globe of the Earth in real time, creating a Sky Tapestryä. The Sky Tapestry will allow people from around the Earth to simultaneously see the sky from a different perspective, inspiring a movement that unites people from various vantage points through one commonality.
“At a time when people are often absorbed in looking down at their phones, feel less connected, and are distracted by the noise around us, we have the power to look up and reconnect,” says actor and LOOK UP partner LeVar Burton.
Adds LOOK UP partner Jill Tarter, Ph.D., “We started this movement with one basic premise: each of us are all born part of this world and greater universe, and a simple action—sharing the experience of looking up—can help us regain our bearings and connection.”
Look Up on October 18, from 00:00:01 to 23:59:59 GMT, is open to everyone worldwide. To participate, follow these four simple steps:
- Download the Skyfie App (iOS or Android — free with no “in app purchases”).
- Look Up and make a Skyfie and upload (all on a single page on the app).
- Explore the Sky Tapestry: find your contribution and see others from across the
- Be inspired by the humor, struggle, ideas, beauty, concerns, dreams, hope; spread the word.
Look Up was announced on September 15, 2017, the 25th anniversary of Jemison’s first spaceflight in 1992. The LOOK UP movement has grown with help from its origin partners and collaborators including Bayer Corporation, National Geographic; Scholastic; MAKERS; Springboard Enterprises; Beautiful Life Development Plan Foundation; Esri; Breakthrough Listen; Traveling Telescope; Lunar & Planetary Institute, Yuri’s Night; Jill Tarter, Ph.D.; LeVar Burton; Jennie Yeung; Loretta Whitesides; Halifu Osumare, Ph.D. and Nichelle Nichols.
LOOK UP partners and contributors believe that it is critical in today’s world to offer this platform, which gives voice to people across cultures, nations and economies to engage and contribute to our shared future. The initiative is purposefully designed to build momentum and evolve as individuals and organizations around the globe connect and develop LOOK UP activities in schools, workplaces, communities and nations.
